General elections are held in [[Osolia]] every two months{{Refn|On evenly-numbered months}} to elect the [[Chief of Osolia]] and [[Speaker of Osolia]]. Elections are regulated by the [[Constitution of the Chiefdom of Osolia|Osolian Constitution]], as well as the [[Fair Elections Act]]. Since the [[June 2024 Osolian general election]], elections have primarily been held in [[my.osolia]].

Both Osolian citizens and [[Residency in Osolia|residents]] are allowed to participate in general elections.

[[Elections in Osolia|General elections]] were held in [[Osolia]] on 15 August 2024. This election was the second election to utilize the [[my.osolia]] system for registering and voting for candidates.

Candidacy registration opened August 1st, 2024 at midnight UTC and lasted until voting opened on August 15th, 2024 at midnight UTC.

== Electoral system ==
During a general election, Osolians vote for the [[Chief of Osolia|Chief]], who leads the executive, and the [[Speaker of Osolia|Speaker]], who leads the legislature.

Elections in Osolia employ instant-runoff voting. Voters rank the candidates for each position in order of preference. During counting, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated in several rounds until someone achieves a majority of the electorate.

Weeks before candidacy opened, incumbent Chief [[TriforceComet]] stated multiple times that he would not seek another term. He would later say that he was not interested in running for any government position. This led to the incumbent Speaker, [[tz_scion]], to plan on running for Chief, and announced over a week before candidacy opened that he intended to do so. However, about an hour before candidacy opened, tz_scion suddenly announced that he was going to drop out of the election and did not want to seek out any government positions.

This led initially two people to sign up for the Chief role instead - [[CalvinX]], the [[Director of Infrastructure]], who has been a well-respected figure in Osolia politics for his work on the nether highway system and the expansion of [[Sahosam]], and [[cstro]], a prominent citizen of Osolia who had only recently joined the politicial sphere by becoming the first Postmaster of the [[Osolian Post Office]].

CalvinX released a "Diet Manifesto" on August 1, 2024, detailing his plans for Chief, including attempting to deflate and stabilize the [[Diamond Cent]], a hotly debated topic in Osolia at this time, along with promising more "large scale projects for the community" and a plan to "beautify Sahosam" by adding "public parks, lamp shades, benches, ponds , small bridges and more personalized things" to the city.

cstro, on the other hand, made it clear that, "As for policies, I don’t have any strong feelings towards a specific policy or decision or really ideal. I am in favor though of just the progression of Osolia as a [Minecraft] server. I think downtown Sahosam still has some potential that is untapped and I would love to see that. But my ideals and stuff aren’t fully formed as my idea for filling out candidacy for Chief was a thought I has that I thought was interesting to pursue." When questioned briefly about this by [[FlynneSkye]] and Chief TriforceComet, cstro decided to drop out of the race immediately. Some expressed confusion about this decision, as even their opponent Calvin stated, "I always saw Cstro as the "maintain the status quo" candidate and that's perfectly acceptable to run on [to be honest]."

After all of these events, Calvin was the only candidate for the Chief position, and no one else ran to contest him.

About a week before candidacy opened, former Chief and current [[Director of Finance]] [[TheRandomMelon|Michael Webb]] announced his intention to run for Speaker instead of Chief like he had previously done in all previous elections. He stated that his time serving as Acting Speaker while Speaker Scion had to tend to personal matters made him realize he would rather serve Osolia as Speaker, citing his work in passing the [[Post Office Act]]. He has vowed to bring more civility and decorum to Assembly meetings and discussions in the #assembly channel on Discord and to come to a "middle ground" on the hotly-debated issue of the economy.

[[Hydrogen]], a former Director of Finance, once again threw his hat into the ring, this time running for Speaker. He has stated in a campaign poster that he will fight for citizens' rights, ensure the Assembly's voice, bring currency reform, increase transparency in politics, and give Osolians the ability to anonymously propose changes.

The '''Melonian Transitional State''', or '''Project Melonia 2.0''' as it was called at the time, was the successor to the [[Republic of Melonia]]. During the transition, several measures were proposed to the Melonian defectors, which formed the basis of governance and server administration that led to the [[Chiefdom of Osolia]].

Several Melonians had increasingly become disgruntled with the state of affairs in Melonia, particularly relating to the [[Cieurnish Empire]]. On December 11th, 2023, [[cstro]] and [[tz_scion]] called [[TheRandomMelon]] to talk to him about their proposal to shut down the Republic of Melonia and invite who they considered to be the core Melonians to a new Discord server. TheRandomMelon was apprehensive about the move, but went through with it, officially closing the server on December 15th, 2023.

13 votes were held on which server plugins would be retained from the previous Melonian world.

The only plugins which failed to reach a majority, and were thusly removed, were; ''Brewery'', which added alcoholic beverages to Minecraft; ''PiggyV2'', which gave players an in-game bank account; and ''TreeFeller'', which would chop down an entire tree trunk automatically with the removal of its base.

''Brewery'' was seen as a relic of [[Cieurnia|Cieurnish]] traditions and therefore was defeated 7 to 1.

An additional 4 votes were held on adding several datapacks. The proposals to add datapacks for extending armor stand functionality, making ''shulkers'' drop 2 ''shulker shells'' when killed, and making ''bats'' drop ''phantom membranes'' when killed all passed. The only datapack proposal not to be added was Measure A22, ''"Add a datapack for mobs/players to drop heads upon dying"''.

Talks of a system of direct democracy, where every citizen voted on bills and measures directly, were discussed shortly after the call between cstro, TheRandomMelon, and tz_scion.

It was decided there would be two branches of government sharing the power to govern: the executive branch and the legislative branch, called the [[Osolian Assembly|Assembly]], in which all citizens took part.

The executive branch is led by the Chief who is elected by the citizenry and handles most decisions pertaining to daily government activity. The executive branch also includes the Chief's Council, a cabinet of ministers who assist the Chief with decisionmaking.

The Assembly is led by the Speaker of the Assembly, also elected by the citizens. The role of the Speaker is to assist in the writing of bills, to gather citizens' opinions on major government decisions, and generally serve as the voice of the people. Each Osolian citizen would automatically serve as a member of the Assembly, and all members have the right to vote on each bill and to bring forth a proposal to the Assembly themselves.

These branches also proved difficult to name, though the name for the executive's leader, "Chief," proposed by EESocket, and the name for the legislature, "the Assembly," proposed by TheRandomMelon, eventually won out. The measure to adopt this form of government passed 7 to 1.{{Navbox Osolia}}

Starting a couple of days before the committee's formation, there was much discussion regarding new measures and moves to make the Osolian Minecraft server more active. With this discussion brewing, Speaker tz_scion ran an "activity poll" to gather the thoughts of the citizens. Some suggested a new world, some suggested adding mods to the server, and others suggested scheduled voice chat sessions.

With all of these suggestions floating around and with discussion being unorganized, Speaker Scion decided to form the first committee in Osolia's history; the Engagement Committee. Committees have always been a part of the [[Constitution of the Chiefdom of Osolia|Osolian constitution]], but were not used until the Engagement Committee was formed.

Speaker Scion was appointed as the temporary chair of the committee to begin proceedings. An official chair election was held amongst members on July 11, 2024 to appoint the permanent chair. Growing concern was spreading throughout Osolia during the [[April 2024 Osolian general election|April 15th election]]. Each candidate stated that bringing events to the table was a priority. For instance, despite a large turnout of 70% in that election, the server itself was growing more and more inactive, and many were expressing their concerns directly to Chief Michael Webb and those other candidates. The server had not hosted an event since January 1, 2024 when a group of Osolians met to defeat the Ender Dragon.

In response to the growing need for more events, after winning re-election, Chief Webb created the [[Department of Events]] on April 16, 2024. Originally, Webb was going to appoint TriforceComet to the position, but Triforce did not want to take on responsibilities at that time, so Webb instead appointed Star to the position, citing her excellent building skills, as well as having the leadership skills needed for that position. The Assembly was founded even before Osolia itself was founded, on December 12, 2023. Before the nation was officially formed, it was already decided by the population of the [[Melonian Transitional State]] that the future nation should employ some form of direct democracy to avoid the alienation and overly dramatic politics that occured previously on the [[Republic of Melonia]] server, the predecessor to Osolia.

However, most also agreed that this should not be the only branch of government, and a proper leader would be needed to make minor and medium-sized decisions at a more rapid pace than a big legislature could realistically do, hence forming the executive branch and creating the [[Chief of Osolia|Chief]] position to serve as this leader.

Since then, the Assembly has served as the most important branch of government in Osolia, being the only branch that can approve new laws and decide whether the Chief can elect certain members to the [[Chief's Council]] or not.

For over 7 months, [[tz_scion]] has served as the Speaker of Osolia, establishing many precedents in the Assembly such as a 24 hour voting period for bills and measures. He has decided not to run for re-election in the [[August 2024 Osolian general election]], meaning that he will be replaced by a new Speaker for the first time in Osolian history.

== Powers, duties and responsibilities ==
The Assembly's powers are defined in the [[Constitution of the Chiefdom of Osolia|Constitution of Osolia]]. In this Constitution, it outlines that the Assembly can draft and vote on new laws, called "bills" before they are passed. Additionally, they can vote on special measures brought forth by the Speaker to enact more general and usually larger-scale motions in Osolia, such as the removal or construction of government buildings. They can use this special measure system to remove any official, elected or not, if they are deemed to be unfit for office by a majority of Parliament. They can also amend the Constitution and vote to remove any citizen that is believed to be unfit for Osolia by a majority of Assembly members.

The Assembly's main duty is to discuss and vote on bills and measures that are brought forth by the Speaker.

The Assembly is responsible for overseeing government officials and ensuring that they are doing their job well enough according to the Assembly's standards.

There were numerous attempts of an online Minecraft nation founded by [[TheRandomMelon]], the earliest of which being a small, democratic city-state named [[Melontown]]. Melontown only contained of TheRandomMelon's friends and his Twitch stream supporters and the activity would be held on his TRM Community server. There were two iterations of Melontown but the overall Melontown project ended on February 7, 2021 due to a lack of activity.

On May 30, 2022, TheRandomMelon would reach out to a couple of his friends, inviting them to a new Minecraft server with the government that Melontown had. This new server ended up being named [[Melonia]]. A vote would be held that would choose what type of government system the server would have, and a city-state system was chosen officially marking the server as the City of Melonia. Melonia would quickly expand in the following months, going from a city-state to a constitutional republic, which resulted in the name commonly known for the server, the Republic of Melonia.

The Republic of Melonia lasted far longer than the predecessor of Melontown, but tensions were tense in the server due to the alliance with another online Minecraft nation, the Cieurnish Empire. The tension between Melonia and the Cieurnish Empire lead to a discussion between tz_scion, TheRandomMelon, and cstro about the future of Melonia. This discussion would result in the formation of [[Melonian Transitional State|Project Melonia 2.0]] on December 12, 2023 at around 3:49 AM UTC. The formation of this server would lead to the closure of Melonia on December 16, 2023 at 6:00 AM UTC and the start of the Chiefdom of Osolia.

There were numerous attempts of an online Minecraft nation founded by [[TheRandomMelon]], the earliest of which being a small, democratic city-state named [[Melontown]]. Melontown only contained of TheRandomMelon's friends and his Twitch stream supporters and the activity would be held on his TRM Community server. There were two iterations of Melontown but the overall Melontown project ended on February 7, 2021 due to a lack of activity.

On May 30, 2022, TheRandomMelon would reach out to a couple of his friends, inviting them to a new Minecraft server with the government that Melontown had. This new server ended up being named [[Melonia]]. A vote would be held that would choose what type of government system the server would have, and a city-state system was chosen officially marking the server as the City of Melonia. Melonia would quickly expand in the following months, going from a city-state to a constitutional republic, which resulted in the name commonly known for the server, the Republic of Melonia.

The Republic of Melonia lasted far longer than the predecessor of Melontown, but tensions were tense in the server due to the alliance with another online Minecraft nation, the Cieurnish Empire. The tension between Melonia and the Cieurnish Empire lead to a discussion between tz_scion, TheRandomMelon, and cstro about the future of Melonia. This discussion would result in the formation of [[Melonian Transitional State|Project Melonia 2.0]] on December 12, 2023 at around 3:49 AM UTC. The formation of this server would lead to the closure of Melonia on December 16, 2023 at 6:00 AM UTC and the start of the Chiefdom of Osolia.
