Osolia Public Radio, sometimes referred to by its acronym OPR, is a public radio network ran by Michael Webb. It has a voice channel in the Osolia Discord server that plays a music playlist 24/7 that has been added to by the community over time, a DJ style request show called The DJ Hour, hosted by OPR owner Michael Webb, and two newer shows called Vinyl Vantage, hosted by Josephine; and The VGM Jam, hosted by TriforceComet.
History
Founding
Soon after Osolia's founding on December 15, 2023, discussion ramped up in Osolia about creating a public radio station that could host various shows and build community. For instance, it was proposed that businesses could sponsor radio shows to promote the economy. The main two discussing Osolia Radio at the time were Michael Webb and tz_scion, who still are the main two people running OPR to this day. On January 2, 2024, tz_scion, who was Speaker at the time, decided to propose a measure to the Assembly that would add Jockie Music to the server, allowing Osolia Radio to use it. The vote passed on January 4, 2024 with 6 yes, 0 no, and 5 abstain votes, and the bot was added, officially creating Osolia Public Radio in the process.
Michael Webb would take the reins of creating this radio station, and therefore got to own the station itself. He immediately asked Osolians to add music to the Regular Programming playlist, a collection of songs that would shuffle and play 24/7 using the Jockie Music bot. Hundreds of songs were added over the next several days.
Creation of The DJ Hour
On January 8, 2024, Michael Webb announced the creation of the first radio show for Osolia Public Radio; The DJ Hour, at the time titled The DJ Hour w/ Chief Michael Webb. The first episode of The DJ Hour w/ Chief Michael Webb would air later that day at 6:00 PM Central Time, and it was seen as a great success for a brand new show on a brand new radio concept for the Osolia community at the time.
Since that time, The DJ Hour has had over 12 episodes and has steadily climbed in the average number of listeners per episode.
Creation of Vinyl Vantage
On September 8th, 2024, Josephine had the idea to create her own radio program while listening to an episode of The DJ Hour. She immediately messaged Michael Webb, the owner of OPR, with her idea and the two workshopped it into Vinyl Vantage. The show initially intended to focus entirely on heavy metal, but the show was broadened to focus on all classic rock music.
With this in mind, a poll was conducted that evening which informed Josephine and Webb that five people were interested in listening, and a further three supported its existence. As of September 11, 2024, Vinyl Vantage has yet to premiere its pilot episode.
Creation of The VGM Jam
According to its creator, TriforceComet, he came up with the idea while listening to The DJ Hour. He quickly realized that he was the only person that regularly submitted video game music to the show, and wanted to explore that theme further in his own show. It was conceptualized in early January 2025.
He formally announced the show on January 13, 2025, stating that the show is "a show exclusively dedicated to video game music. Whether its based on genre, series, or console it was released on, only games that fit the theme of the episode will be eligible." The first episode was aired the next day on January 14, 2025.
OPR 2.0
During episode 19 (season 2 episode 9) of The DJ Hour, show host and OPR owner Michael Webb was in talks with Blake, an Osolian citizen known for his technical ability, about improvements that could be made to Osolia Public Radio.
Previously, Osolia Public Radio was ran using a bot called Jockie Music, which would play OPR Regular Programming from a playlist file 24/7 exclusively in the Osolia Public Radio Discord channel. Additionally, Webb had to pay $5 per month to the developer of Jockie Music to be allowed to run the bot 24/7. This system was also inflexible; it was not able to insert "bumpers" between songs, which many radio stations in real life do, it did not have any kind of file storage to archive songs or episodes of OPR shows, and its shuffle function would infamously always start with Everlong by Foo Fighters after an OPR show ended.
To fix these problems, Osolia Public Radio 2.0 uses external software to run the radio component itself, named Azuracast. Azuracast has many features to aid Osolia Public Radio, such as the ability to flexibly and automatically insert randomized bumpers every two songs, smoothly crossfade between songs, automatically store recordings of OPR shows, a schedule system to schedule OPR shows, both live and reruns, and crucially, a website that allows listeners to request what song plays next during Regular Programming, in addition to listening without joining a Discord VC. The only perceived flaw with OPR 2.0 currently is that because OPR shows have to be broadcasted like a Twitch stream would be, this introduces around a 5-8 second delay, which did not previously exist.
The community has received these changes very positively despite the flaw listed above, though, with an uptick in listeners to Regular Programming post-launch.
